How is sports massage different? 

The basic techniques in sports massage can be the same as other forms of therapeutic massage although it requires more skill, anatomical knowledge and purpose. Deep muscle therapy is often used. Techniques may be used to break down adhesions, soften scar tissue and increase mobility. Sports massage is designed to reduce the risk of an injury or enact the body’s recovery response and manage injuries. It can provide more flexibility and mobility, relieving pain and potentially improving performance.

Does sports massage hurt? 

Deeper muscle work can provide a deeper impact but can also border on uncomfortable when working on problem areas. The massage should never be so painful that it causes you to tighten up or tense with pain (resist). This would be of little benefit as the therapist is working against the body, and you should let your therapist know if you feel the need to resist. Some soreness may result for 1-3 days after treatment from the deeper pressure – but like a good workout, you’ll feel the benefit.

How should I prepare for a sports massage at Function Minnesota? 

Know any specific areas you’ll want to have treated. Decide if you want to address the whole body with less focus on any specific areas, or just want to focus strictly on one area. Consider whether or not you think you will prefer to try some light stretching to further increase the effectiveness of the treatment. If stretching is desired, bring a pair of compression shorts to maintain modesty and comfort when stretching.

What is the environment of a sports massage treatment at Function? 

A clean, professional and relaxing space. Much like a normal massage studio but a little more bright and modern. Draping is always used (unless clothed) and your personal privacy is always maintained. Compression shorts and sports bras can be worn to allow sports treatment and stretching without the draping.
